Course Description
This is the second module in a two-part series focused on suicide risk assessment and prevention in clinical practice. Module 1 focuses on recognizing risk patterns in individuals and populations and explores the public perceptions of suicide, suicide as a public policy issue, laws pertaining to suicide, and the prevalence of suicide in the United States. Module 1 also addresses the correlates and causes of suicide, including gender-based, ethnicity-based, and age-based variations in suicide rates. Module 2 focuses on suicide risk assessments and interventions in clinical practice, including known causes and correlates of suicide, content to be included in suicide risk assessments, and specific intervention strategies. Both modules incorporate case vignettes, interactive exercises, short web-based videos, and optional resources. The online posttest must be passed with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate.

California Requirement: Since January 1, 2021, all California licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), and licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) applicants and licensees (upon renewal) have been required to complete at least six (6) hours of coursework or supervised experience in suicide risk assessment and intervention.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, readers will be able to do the following:
- Identify correlates and causes of suicide.
- Identify suicide risk factors by diagnosis.
- Identify content for suicide risk assessment, including assessing past suicidal behavior, suicidal ideation, demographic correlates, and relationships, as well as protective factors.
- Identify two commonly used structured suicide risk screening tools, as well as identified limits of such tools.
- Identify the principles of crisis intervention and specific strategies for reducing the risk of suicide.
- Identify the manner in which postvention can be utilized as suicide prevention.
- Identify examples of intervention strategies, including ways to assist the client in identifying intervention goals and objectives.
