Course Details

Course Description

This is the first module in a two-part series focused on suicide risk assessment and prevention in clinical practice. Module 1 focuses on recognizing risk patterns in individuals and populations and explores the public perceptions of suicide, suicide as a public policy issue, laws pertaining to suicide, and the prevalence of suicide in the United States. Module 1 also addresses the correlates and causes of suicide, including gender-based, ethnicity-based, and age-based variations in suicide rates. Module 2 focuses on suicide risk assessments and interventions in clinical practice, including known causes and correlates of suicide, content to be included in suicide risk assessments, and specific intervention strategies. Both modules incorporate case vignettes, interactive exercises, short web-based videos, and optional resources. The online posttest must be passed with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion.

Target Audience

View California Requirement: Since January 1, 2021, all California licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), and licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) associates and licensees (upon first renewal on or after January 1, 2021) have been required to complete at least six (6) hours of coursework or supervised experience in suicide risk assessment and intervention.

CEUs Nationwide: One or both modules can be used as continuing education and professional development for social workers and other professionals nationwide.

Identify the laws pertaining to suicide, including physician-assisted suicide and involuntary detention of suicidal individuals, and the standard of care as it pertains to suicide risk assessment.

Identify correlates and contributing causes of suicide that can be used when assessing an individual’s suicide risk and evaluating its severity.
Identify sociological and psychological explanations for suicide.
