Course Description
This is the second module of a two-part series that explores the legal and ethical standards for creating clinical safety. Module 1 explores how to create and maintain clinical safety by complying with the standard of practice, scope of practice, scope of competence, therapeutic duty, and legal parameters of confidentiality. Module 2 explores how to create and maintain clinical safety by obtaining informed consent, avoiding conflicts of interest, safely terminating therapy, and safely managing crisis and high-risk issues, such as suicide risk and child abuse. Module 2 incorporates online content, reader exercises, case vignettes, and sample documentation.
Target Audience
The two-part series can be used toward the California pre-license mandated 12 hours of law and ethics coursework.
The two-part series can be used to meet the ongoing license renewal requirement of six hours of training in law and ethics for California LCSWs and LMFTs.

After completing this module, readers will be able to do the following:
- Identify the legal and ethical standards for creating and maintaining clinical safety.
- Identify the legal and ethical standards for creating appropriate informed consent, including documenting the risks and benefits of therapy and specific treatment modalities.
- Identify the legal and ethical standards for avoiding conflicts of interest, including dual relationships and sexual relationships with clients.
- Identify the legal and ethical standards for safely terminating therapy.
- Identify the legal and ethical standards for managing crisis and high-risk issues, such as the risk of suicide or suspected child and elder or dependent adult abuse.
- Identify legal, ethical, and clinical resources related to creating and maintaining clinical safety in psychotherapy.
