Course Details

Course Description

This is the third module in a five-part series that provides the California mandated pre-license 10-hour human sexuality coursework. The five modules incorporate reading specific pages in seven chapters of the book The Psychology of Human Sexuality (2nd edition). The book can be borrowed from a library system, or rented as an eBook through online vendors, such as Amazon. Because there are many complex topics related to human sexuality, the subject matter highlighted in the five modules is meant to provide a basic introduction and broad overview of specific topics pertinent to therapeutic settings rather than an in depth study. For each module, participants can print the posttest study guide to use while they read the assigned pages of the book.

Target Audience

This course is designed to meet the California pre-licensure requirement of 10 hours of human sexuality coursework to obtain an LCSW, LMFT, or LPCC license.

Learning Objectives

After completing the course, registrants will be able to do the following:

  • Identify major factors that contribute to one’s sexual orientation and sexual identity, including both behavior and espoused labels.
  • Define broad categories of sexual orientation, including but not limited to homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality.
  • Identify key biopsychosocial theories of the development of sexual orientations and interests.
  • Define common sexual prejudices and describe their common ramifications, particularly for homosexual and bisexual individuals.
