Course Description

This course is designed to set out the legal standards related to the protective duties of California licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), including mandated reporting responsibilities. The content is divided into three major topics. The first topic is the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and its requirements, as outlined in the California Penal Code (PC). The second topic is the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act and its requirements, as outlined in Chapter 11 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC). The third topic is the Tarasoff ruling (which resulted in psychotherapists’ duty to warn and protect) and its requirements, as outlined in case law. In each section, the definition of key terms is discussed, mandated reporters are identified, and reporting duties are clarified in a manner designed to ensure the highest level of clinical practice. To complete the course, the online posttest must be passed with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion.

Target Audience

This module can be used to meet the ongoing six-hour license renewal requirement for law and ethics training for California LCSWs.
